"Grant Thornton is a wonderful place to work, providing good quality study support and a range of different career opportunities"

Laura Corbet - Tax Assistant Manager

What did you want to be when you were younger?

Anything but someone who worked in an office! I had pondered being a vet, or a policewoman, and had hopes of being a princess.

What made you choose your current profession?

I managed to fall into accountancy quite by chance and whilst studying for my ACA qualification.

As an auditor it became apparent that tax was an area of work I particularly enjoyed and it was the area I appeared to do best in when sitting my exams. Needless to say, despite never intending on working in an office, I wouldn’t look back.

Why did you choose to work for Grant Thornton?

I chose Grant Thornton because the size of the firm is substantial enough to provide great training opportunities whilst being small enough to still maintain a good level of working and personal relationships.

How has Grant Thornton helped you grow professionally?

Not only has Grant Thornton supported me through the later stages of my ACA qualification, but the firm has also supported me throughout my CTA qualification. Aside from this, our directors and senior management are great role models as you aim to develop in your career. They provide both technical insight and advice surrounding soft skills and people management.

One of my favourite experiences, which has helped me to grow as a professional, was a trip to our Norwich office to gain some experience working with the UK VAT team. This was an opportunity I feel very lucky to have had; I created great contacts and expanded my knowledge in this area.

Why do you like working at Grant Thornton?

For me, Grant Thornton is a wonderful place to work, providing good quality study support and a range of different career opportunities. There is a friendly atmosphere in the office so coming to work is much more a pleasure than a chore.
